Projects galore

T minus 3 days +/- 1 day until Luka's arrival.

We have lots of projects to do around the house. We are full of ideas and inspriations. We have big projects and little projects.

We need to:
- Finish the garage update project that we started in the spring, that means redoing the painting, and filling the remaining portions or the trench with gravel.

- Paint the living room, stairwell, and upstairs hallway. All are currently too dark and need to be lightened up. Also in the living room we need new light switches and electrical outlets, they are all outdated.

- Replace light fixtures in the dining room and kitchen, they came with the house and we don't like them.

- Most of the woodwork in our house has at some point acquired paint where there should not be paint, the woodwork needs to be cleaned up.

- Finish/refinish the floors throughout the house. Internet, do you know how to tell whether a floor needs to be finished or refinished? How the difference between whether is has be waxed or oiled?

- Do some landscaping in the front of the house, new edging, mulch, and plants would make the front of the house much nicer.

- Reroute the gutter downspout the Bernie keeps trying to destroy so that he no longer has the opportunity to destroy it.

- Place garden fabric under the pavings stones we laid down to keep Bernie from going fugitive on us. This will keep grass from growing between the bricks.

- Layout a garden and build an enclosure to protect the garden from our local critter population.

- Build a suitable pad to place a doghouse on. Purchase said doghouse. Dog will be able to stay outside longer without wife freaking out.

- Paint bathroom and install exhaust fan. Moisture is causing the current paint to peel. Re-glaze sink? It has peeled some paint/glaze and become somewhat of an eyesore. Also, reset door strike plate in bathroom so the lock works.

- Install a new shelving system both in the master closet and in the downstairs closet. We need all the space we can get in this house, redoing closets helps a lot.

- Install shelving in rooms throughout the house. T's room, dining room, and living room would all benefit from some new shelves.

- Hire someone to roof the house at some point. Since the leak last year, I have not idea how long the rest is going to hold up...maybe it was an isolated incident.

- Fix up the basement to make it a usuable space. Not finishing it but laying down some flooring and getting a treadmill, TV, and seating down there would be a welcome addition.

So for now, there is the list. Where in the hell do we start?

Technologically impaired

First off, no, the baby has not arrived yet! Thanks for asking, please come again!

Now, back to the matter at hand. My mom stayed with us last night so we got to show off our new toys. She was impressed, although very confused as to how it all works. She told us a story of how my dad and she went to Blockbuster and actually ventured to rent a DVD. Apparently they were able to get the TV to the correct input to see the DVD but then couldn't figure out how to navigate the menus to actually play the movie. Go figure.

So, mom and dad, I believe a technology lesson is in store for you the next time I visit, call it Low-Tech 101: TV Inputs, DVD players, and Remote Controls:

Students will learn recognition and appropriate use of cabling going to and from the back of TV as well as an introduction to the remote control skills necessary to switch between input devices and operate a DVD player. Upon completion of the course students will be required to switch between TV and DVD inputs and play a DVD with no help from the course instructor.

As a bonus I'll even throw in the old wireless B-router I have so that you can hook both your computers up to the web. Maybe someday they'll even get a digital camera.
