Crash

Today I got one of those calls that people never want to get. Michelle called me at work at about 2:15 today and informed me that my Mom had been a car wreck. Turns out it was pretty bad.

She was heading to Ames for a conference, in front of her was a dump truck with a trailer and apparently the trailer became detached. The rest is a blur of sirens, phone calls, and emergency medical procedures. She is alive and as of tonight she is in stable condition, but it's going to be a long recovery. She has a broken C-2 verterbrae in her neck, a broken pelvis, a severely broken left arm, and a brain hemorrage. She does have movement in her hands, I observed that myself, and I thought I saw her move her toes, so I think, from my uninformed medical opinion that she has escaped paralysis of any kind (finger crossed), but there is certainly a lot of rehab in surgery to take place in the near future.

After Michelle called I rushed home, my mind in swirl. At that point all we knew was that there was a wreck and some kind of emergancy surgery was being done. All the bad thoughts rushed through my head. What if she dies? What if she dies and I'm not there? When was the last time I saw her? All I knew was that I needed to get here, to Des Moines, and be here. Michelle tried to argue that we should stay in CR and wait until we got more information, but all I could think was "car wreck + emergency surgery = bad, must go." Then my brother called and told us the basics about her injuries. I was packing Luka's bag, trying to hold it together. How could this happen to my Mom? She couldn't possibly go out like this. Hold it together. Gotta go.

So here we are, I'm a bit relieved because she is in stable condition, but it is my Mom, and she is hooked up to a ventilator at the moment. Pray for us. The next few days, weeks, and months are going to be trying.

And Mom, I love you. Get better, we (Dad, Gabe, Elena, Collen, Michelle, Luka, and everyone else) need you around .

Great Moments in Paper Shredding

The other day Joe and Caleb were over while Jaime and Jason were out looking at cars. Usually my routine when I get home from work is to peruse the mail and shred everything that we don't need to keep. On this day, however, I decided to have my new personal assistants help in the paper shredding task. I gave them each sheet after sheet, one at a time, taking turns. I failed, however, in just one regard, when I didn't explicitly tell my assistants they were only to shred pieces of paper I handed them.

The next thing I knew Caleb was standing over the shredder as it went off, I knew that I hadn't given him something to shred, so I said "Caleb, what did you shred?" And Caleb, non-plussed and very proud of himself said "Mail."

After that the rules changed and we still have no idea what exactly he shredded.

Addicted

We haven't watched TV all week. Not because it hasn't been on, or the power has been out or anything like that, but because we can't stop playing the 360. Doesn't matter who. Shel, the Unit, myself. Yesterday we downloaded the full versions of Bejeweled, Zuma, and Hearts. Shel is addicted to Hexic even though she can't really see the patterns yet, she just spins the pieces until she gets a match. And the Unit, let's just say that the Unit, I believe on good evidence, got up in the middle of the night last night to play on the 360. Not that G Money and I have never done that, cough cough, Super Mario 2.

Myself, I think I'm addicted to attempting to earn achievement points. So far I only have 25, but as soon as I get up to speed on NBA 2k6 they should start rolling in. Last night I burned my brain up trying to beat as many of the Bejewled puzzle levels as possible. Also, Hexic is hard, I've gotten decent at getting the flowers, but the next goal is to get a black pearl, which will be hard. Currently though I am ranked something like 31509 in the world wide timed mode Hexic standings, so I have that going for me.

That's the status from the ranch, later cowboys and cowgirls.

It's a 360 world, and I'm just playing in it

Yep, that's right, the Xbox 360 has arrived at the Flores household, as you can see by the umbiquitous gamertag now present in the right hand column of this blog. So far we have played a few of the arcade games, downloaded some demos, purchased NBA 2k6 (learning curve = steep), and setup the Media Center functionality, it rocks. So if you don't hear from me in the next few weeks you know where to find me. And a shout out to Jones, Gabe, Gene, and Dan...get one damnit, then we can play and it will be supafly. Later.
